Brion Vibber, CTO of Wikimedia Foundation, will speak to us about scaling their LAMP Stack for International presence. Wikipedia now has Headquarters in San Francisco and data centers in Florida and the Netherlands...and personnel in diverse locations globally will discuss how they support this presence. Technologies to be discussed are:

Setting up: Apache/PHP, MySQL, memcached, and Squid caching tiers for traffic scale.

What tricks Wikipedia uses in the MediaWiki application itself to support them.

Explicit HTTP cache support, application-level database load balancing, replication monitoring.

...And More!

He will further inform us how these various services interact and in which different directions they scale to help you write code which you can leverage on both small and large sites.

Thank you to Sun's Startup Essentials team for sponsoring this event and providing the food & beverages.

CBS Interactive will be holding a holiday food drive to help the San Francisco Food Bank. This is your chance to make a real difference in our community and join the effort to help those who are less fortunate. All donations will help the San Francisco Food Bank to supply food to over 600 food programs operated by partnering community service agencies and food pantries throughout the city.
The Food Bank particularly needs the following items:

  • Canned tuna, fish, meat
  • Peanut butter
  • Soups, stews and “meals in a can”
  • Canned fruits and vegetables
  • 100% fruit juices
  • Beans, rice, pasta

Thank you for your help. Together, we can help give our neighbors the perfect holiday gift!

Yeah I know that Sun just laid off 150% of their workforce, but can they still provide the pizza?
