Hey Dominic! I'd recommend coming to our next meetup scheduled for jan 21st. As a group memeber you get discounts from O'Reilly which has TONS of training videos, books,etc all about actionscript.
Check out Actionscript3 Animation [http://tiny.cc/9zqe6 ]. I think this one is good for beginners, because it's fun to see how code alone can create amazing artwork, plus its an easier way to become comfortable with creating Flash content without really using the Flash tool and using flex instead!
